King Parrots in Tonal Strip

King Parrots are typical bird species, in that the male, is more brightly plumed than the female.

I thought the best way to show this was to strip the surrounding colour out of the image. Firstly The Male.

Male King Parrot

He has a bright red head and body and beautiful underwing and tail pattern.

Female King Parrot

Female King Parrot

Green headed, with small amount of torso cover in Red, the female blends in much better to her background colours.

I have a theory, that this blending might have something to do with egg/nest protection, as the male will fly away from the nest to decoy the female if anything approaches.

The conifer these birds nest in provide protection and the seed pod is like a lolly for them!
